The Department of English supports the liberal arts program by fostering an appreciation for the English language and the way it is used for literature, writing and communications. The overall objectives of the department are to encourage the ability to think critically, to communicate clearly, and to gain a deeper awareness of the humanities and of the individual as a total being.

The English major provides a strong background for graduate school or careers in journalism, public relations, advertising, mass media, teaching and technical writing.
